Discover the Best Things to Do in Redding, CA

Surrounded by snowcapped mountain peaks and bursting with untouched natural landscapes, Redding is practically begging you to visit. Those who frequent this small but exciting California gem know the hype is real—where else can you cross a bridge that doubles as a giant sundial?

If you’re here for the unmatched outdoors of Redding, we’ve got you covered with a guide to the rolling hills and miles of hiking trails that crisscross the region. Sometimes you just need to slow down though, and we can’t think of a better way than by seeing the local sights. Here are our picks for some of the best, can’t-miss attractions in this charming town.

Mcconnell Arboretum & Botanical Gardens

Do you like plants? You will after spending an afternoon in the Mcconnell Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. Open from 7:15 in the morning to dusk, this blooming section of the Turtle Bay exploration park is full of plant life from all over the world.

The botanical gardens feature imports from Mediterranean regions, a climate that Redding closely resembles. In other words, it’s hot, and plants from South Africa, Chili, Australia, and others thrive here.

For a look at local plant life, visit the arboretum, which is almost always in bloom with California-native trees, brush, grass, flowers, and more. It’s a peaceful place, and no one will blame you if you wind up on a park bench just taking it all in for an hour. Or three.

Have kids with you? Don’t miss the Children’s Garden, complete with fountains and a play structure designed by local artist
Colleen Barry. Lastly, visit the medicinal garden, featuring species used in herbal remedies and insight into natural healing practices.

Sundial Bridge

We know you already Googled it, but here’s our take on this one-of-a-kind structure that’s become a bit of a local icon. Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and completed in 2004, the Sundial Bridge connects the North and South areas of Turtle Bay with style.

The bike and pedestrian-only structure is lined with glass panels, which are illuminated from underneath at night. At over 700 feet long and costing nearly $24 million to construct, there are few other structures in the US quite as unique.

However, the most interesting feature is the 217-foot-tall inclined pylon (fancy name for bridge support) that doubles as a functioning sundial. Marks beneath the bridge highlight the movement of the enormous shadow throughout the day, which moves about one foot each minute. You have to see it to truly appreciate it, which we highly recommend.

Waterworks Park Redding

Ready for a little fun in the sun? Get ready for a splashing good time at Waterworks Park. This popular waterpark has plenty to do for all ages, so the little ones can run around the splash pad while mom and dad lounge in the lazy river. Here are some great reasons to stop by:

Rides

  • The Dragon: An exciting ride for adventure-seekers packed with twists and turns. We recommend riding this one before you get lunch.
  • Cyclone: A giant bowl with high walls that pulls riders down and out through a twisting slide. Features single and double tubes, so you and a loved one can both experience being sucked down the drain.
  • Lazy Lagoon: Relax and let the hours go by as you drift lazily along—a favorite among parents or anyone who needs a break. Just don’t stay in too long…
  • Kiddie Playground: Perfect for small kids who want their own space to play. Complete with shallow water and plenty of activities to keep them busy.
  • Cowabunga Beach: A massive, 10,000-square-foot wave pool that simulates ocean waves. Great for those who wish they could be out at sea during a hurricane.

This is just the tip of the iceberg (we can’t spoil everything), and there are plenty of other things to see and do at Waterworks. The park also features a variety of amenities to make your stay as relaxing as possible, like a café, cabanas to keep you out of the sun, and more.

Hours for the park vary, so be sure to check their
website and book in advance for the best experience. Summer and early fall are the ideal times to visit, and if you can stop by on a weekday, you’ll avoid the crowds. “Water” you waiting for?
